A new bike hub facility has been officially opened outside Crewe Railway Station - providing the opportunity for cyclists to park there at a price of £5 for a lifetime.

The new facility was officially opened outside Crewe Railway Station's Weston Road entrance, on Sunday.

The hub was formally opened by Crewe Town Mayor, Cllr Nan Walton, and the Mayor of Cheshire East, Cllr David Marren.

This facility has been funded by Network Rail, aiming to provide secure bike parking and easy access to the Weston Road entrance.

Cycle enthusiast and Crewe West town councillor, Cllr Ben Wye, was also in attendance at the opening.

Cllr Wye told Nub News: "Bike security is a key barrier to people switching to more affordable, healthy and environmental transport.

"This secure hub will allow people from Crewe to commute conveniently and confidently."

For £5, cyclists can obtain a lifetime access fob from Crewe Railway Station's Ticket Office.

Crewe West town councillor, Cllr Ben Wye, helped to get the new Crewe cycle hub ready. He attended the official opening (Crewe Town Council).

160 spaces are available and the hub houses a bike pump.

Cllr Wye helped out to get the cycle hub ready for its grand opening. He said: "One of the barriers to cycling is the rise in thefts, so this facility is greatly to be welcomed.

"Cycling is good for you and good for Crewe: for health, traffic congestion and the economy."

During the pandemic cycling rates increased by 46%.

Government funding announced this month, aims to double cycling rates, and increase short journeys that are walked or cycled to 50% by 2025.

The Government also aims to develop a world class cycling network by 2040.

People on foot and on bikes came together to celebrate the official opening of the Crewe Railway Station Cycle Hub (Friends of Crewe Station).

This active travel renaissance showed a number of people the benefits of a different way of travelling, particularly for shorter journeys.

Quieter roads and less congestion gave many people the space, confidence and opportunity make short cycle journeys for pleasure, and later for work.

Cllr Wye added: "It's emission-free, which reduces toxins in our air and makes our towns and cities nicer places to live.

"It eases congestion, which is a drag on our economy, and it makes us healthier, helping to keep us fit and preventing thousands of premature deaths from physical inactivity and poor air quality.

"This is while it is saving our NHS billions of pounds each year.

"Key to this will be fully integrated transport connections, allowing door to door travel that is clean, affordable and sustainable, but matching the convenience of the car while supporting the green recovery."

The opening event was attended by Chair of the Crewe Town Council Community Plan Committee, Cllr Benn Minshall and Cheshire East Council Cycling and Walking champion, Suzie Akers-Smith.
