A group set up to look after a Sandbach park is celebrating - after repair work was carried out following vandalism at the park.

The Friends of Elworth Park were faced with a broken gate to the children's area at the park off Middlewich Road.

Sandbach Nub News told earlier in the week https://sandbach.nub.news/news/local-news/vandals-attack-elworth-park-but-local-residents-fight-back-and-launch-new-initiatives-143332 how the Friends of Elworth Park had rallied round following the vandalism.

Local resident, Simon Walton, a professional welder, stepped in and agreed to repair the gate which has had its hinges broken.

Now the group is looking forward to one of their regular litter pick and tidy up sessions tomorrow (Saturday) to keep the park looking spic and span.

Friends of Elworth Park secretary, Nicola Cook and an Elworth town councillor said on Social Media: "Thank you to Simon Walton, a local resident, who is an accredited and professional welder.

The gate had to be removed to be repaired.

"Simon contacted us within 30 minutes of letting people know of the vandalism wanting to help.

His family use the park and know just how important that the gate is in maintaining the safety of the playground.

Cllr Nicola Cook

"It was discovered that the gate wasn't in the best state in addition to the damage which has also now been sorted.

A huge, huge thank you to Simon. It reminds us once again how we should be proud of our Elworth community and the residents that make it."

As well as the broken gate, graffiti was also strewn over benches and litter bins which the group managed to remove.

Cllr Cook said earlier in the week: "The community response to this damage has been fantastic, and truly shows that when a small minority go low then the vast majority go high, and makes us proud of our Elworth community."

"Basically whoever was bouncing on the gate while it was swung open snapped both the hinges off."
