A pub housed in a building thought to be Sandbach's oldest is currently temporarily closed while structural work is carried out.

The popular historic Lower Chequer pub in Crown Bank, named after the chequer board, dates back to 1570.

In a previous life, the building was the town's 'counting house, hence the name, before it became a pub.

Owned by Joule's brewery, the gable end of the building, which is listed, needs structural work.

Landlady Francesca Bell, is waiting for the work to be completed before she can reopen the pub to customers.

Joule's say the building is safe and structural reports have been done and the work needing to be done is being scheduled.

A spokesperson from Joule's said: "Comprehensive structural reports have been conducted, and we have been in close consultation with building control authorities who have confirmed that there is no danger posed to the site.

"While we acknowledge that the site requires some work, there is no danger, and we are currently scheduling these necessary improvements.

"Comprehensive structural reports have been commissioned, and we have been in close consultation with Cheshire East Building Control Authorities as well as working closely with Heritage as the pub is a listed building.

"Building Controls have confirmed that there is no danger posed to the site.

"Currently, we are working diligently to mitigate certain issues affecting our tenants.

"These matters are being addressed with the utmost priority and care, ensuring that all necessary actions are taken promptly and effectively.

"The safety and well-being of our tenants, team, and patrons are our highest priority.

"While we acknowledge that the site requires some maintenance at this period in time, we are working closely with listed building specialists and contractors on the specific requirements , there is no danger, and we are currently scheduling these necessary improvements.

"We are now in talks with the Tenants to plan the next steps at the Lower Chequer.

"We appreciate the patience and understanding of the community as we resolve these issues and look forward to reopening The Lower Chequer as soon as possible."
