The RSPCA has launched an appeal after a gravely ill pony was found abandoned in a farm field in Betchton near Sandbach.

The white and black colt was found by caretakers of a farm on Love Lane who noticed the foal had suddenly appeared in the field between 10 pm on Sunday (2 June), and around 8.15am on Monday (June 3rd).

The padlock on the gate to the private land had been forced open, and the pony was left in the entrance way behind the gate.

The RSPCA and a vet attended to treat the pony who was emaciated and badly impacted by an obvious prolapse to his rear end.

RSPCA Animal Rescue Officer Tom Hall said: "This was a very upsetting discovery for people to make and I'm concerned about how this poor pony came to be in such a bad way. It was incredibly sad to see such a young foal suffering in this way.

"The vet estimates the colt to be around a year old, although he has the teeth of a two-month-old foal, likely to be caused by malnutrition.

"Despite their best efforts, his condition was so poor that they put him to sleep to end his suffering.

"The broken padlock suggests that someone has deliberately forced entry to this field to place the pony inside.

"I'm appealing to anyone with information about the pony to contact me in complete confidence on our Inspctor's appeal line on 0300 123 8018."
