A café is offering free meals to children on Sandbach market days during the half term break in support of Marcus Rashford's school meals campaign.

Jo Rock's Café made the kind offer following last week's government decision to vote down the extension of free school meals during the holidays.

The owner of the café, Joanne Alcock, told Sandbach Nub News: "I've been in that situation before where I've needed free school meals. I was on my own with three kids and we needed free school meals and I just think a lot of people benefitted last time when they did it through the holidays.

"I live on a council estate so there's quite a lot of children who rely on it and I just thought it would be good if they did it again."

Due to market opening times, Joanne is only able to make the offer on Thursday and Saturday over the half term break.

Joanne said families with school-age children can come down to her café and get a free hotdog or burger box.

On their first day of opening on Saturday after announcing the kind offer on social media, Jo Rock's Café received a number of donations from members of the public to support the effort.

The café owner was also critical of the government's stance on the issue, saying: "You can't say that kids need meals through the summer holidays, but they don't need meals through the half term and Christmas."

Cheshire East Council have also announced it will provide families in need with shopping vouchers over half term.

To access these vouchers, contact the social care and early help teams either via your named support worker or by calling 0300 123 5012.
