Members of a Sandbach church will be celebrating Burns Night tomorrow in style – and bringing it forward to a lunch date instead.

Elworth Methodist Church in Station Road holds a Tuesday lunch club every week for those wanting to pop in for a meal and chat.

But as it's Burns Night tomorrow, the church decided to make their weekly lunch group a "Burns lunch" instead.

And today (Monday) lay leader Jean Ellershaw and steward Trish Jones were busy preparing the vegetables ready to make the hearty Scottish fare.

Jean said: "We'd usually have around 90 at our Burns Night but decided to make it lunch time instead to make it easier.

"Due to Covid a lot of people don't want to come out so there are fewer people this year and we've made it lunch time instead of an evening event.

"It's always a popular event and we're sure tomorrow's lunch will be as successful as past events."

Jean and Trish will be joining chef Jenny Broad to prepare a traditional Scottish lunch to honour the famous Scottish poet.

There will be haggis, neeps and tatties and chicken and leek pie as an alternative followed by the traditional Scottish dessert, cranachan.

The church doesn't set a price for events – instead anyone attending, like their coffee shop – makes a donation.

"We think it's a lot fairer way of doing things," says Jean, who with Trish has been busy chopping up vegetables ready for tomorrow.

Burns Night held every year on January 25th is the anniversary of the birth of Robert Burns - Scotland's national bard.
