Cheshire East Council has thanked scores of people who have sent in donations and offered help to the Afghan refugees being rehomed in the borough.

And the people of Sandbach and the surrounding area have also been thanked for stepping in and helping with donations and sorting through items and clothing.

A centre has been set up in the town for volunteers to help sort through clothing and other items and local churches in the area have been asked to source warm adult coats.

Now Cheshire East, who have set up the Afghan settlement scheme, say they have all they need and aren't asking for any more donations at the present time.

A tweet put out by Cheshire East Council on their Twitter feed today said: "We have the situation well in hand and are not seeking donations of clothing/personal items.

"We thank the kind-hearted people of Cheshire East who have inquired. To offer other practical support for the scheme email [email protected] "

Yesterday it was revealed that refugees fleeing the Taliban in Afghanistan are to be rehomed by Cheshire East Council.

Some of those who worked supporting British forces in the trouble-torn country will be offered temporary accommodation in the borough, while five families are to be rehoused on a longer-term basis.

It says it will help the new arrivals by providing advice and information about the UK and Cheshire East and support to the families while they are in temporary accommodation.

Covid vaccines are being offered to all families and regular testing.

Nichola Thompson, director of commissioning for Cheshire East Council, said, "The council has an important role to play in supporting the individuals who worked with British forces in Afghanistan and their families, who have moved with them to the UK.

"Moving from your home country is a significant life event for anyone at any time, particularly considering the difficult circumstances seen in Afghanistan."
