Campaigners fighting climate change are staging a demonstration on The Cobbles tomorrow (Saturday 29 August) from 11am to 12.30pm.

They say the recent heat waves have shown that climate change is happening and is already affecting the weather in Sandbach.

And they are calling on call on the government not to grant approval of the Rosebank oil field and urge Cheshire East Council to speed up action to meet its commitment to be carbon neutral by 2030.

"Unless urgent action is taken then extreme weather events will become more frequent and we could see catastrophic climate change," said a spokesperson.

"If the Gulf Stream weakens or stops, then British summers will become hotter and winters will become colder.

"Who would have thought a few years ago that we would be praying for rain in Sandbach, but the dry spell this summer showed how dependent we are on the weather?

"The grass turned yellow, but is now recovering in most places. If future heat waves are longer then trees could start dying and crops could fail. The costs of failing to take action are huge.

"Climate change is being driven by carbon emissions, particularly the burning of fossil fuels. The UK could be at the forefront of reducing carbon emissions.

"We have world-beating skills in offshore wind as well as an expanding solar and hydro-electric sector.

"This summer, Cheshire East Council is running again its highly effective Switch Together programme to help residents fit solar panels and batteries from trusted suppliers, saving money on fuel bills and reducing carbon emissions.

"We know what needs to be done and good progress is already being made. The UK has more than halved its carbon emissions since 1990 and Cheshire East Council has more than halved its emissions since 2019.

"But more needs to be done and the oil industry is lobbying hard (as the tobacco industry did) to downplay the damage caused by burning fossil fuels, the urgency of the problem and to make false claims about the benefits of fossil fuels.

"The latest claims from the oil industry are that we must open up new oilfields in the North Sea, whereas in fact more wind and solar power would make UK much less affected by global oil and gas price shocks."

Campaigners are urging as many people as possible to take part in the demonstration and show their support for climate change.

"The aim of the demonstration are to engage people in the campaign over climate change, call on the government not to grant approval of the Rosebank oil field and urge Cheshire East Council to speed up action to meet its commitment to be carbon neutral by 2030," added the spokesperson.
