Sandbach Day of Dance is back on the calendar despite funding being cut by the town council
By Deborah Bowyer 18th Feb 2026
Organisers of Sandbach Day of Dance have announced the date for this year's event which takes place in May and planning is underway thanks to the launch of a Crowdfunding appeal after council funding was winthdrawn.
Sandbach Town Council voted to withdraw the funding of £3,000 for this year's event and the one following year after some councillors alleged the 'grey faces caused racial offence to some parts of the community'.
Soon afterwards, a Crowdfunding appeal was launched here which has raised £1,375 and now this year's event is to be held on 30 May with a call for interested Morris dancing sides to come forward.
The Sandbach Day of Dance said on Social Media: "Planning has already started for our Sandbach Day of Dance 2026 being held on Saturday 30th May. If there are any sides interested in attending, please send us a message or email.""
The event also made national headlines today in The Sun newspaper here and The Daily Mail newspaper here who both ran stories about the funding saga.
Sandbach Day of Dance say on their Crowdfunding page: "Sandbach Day of Dance includes Border Morris, Clog Step, Cotswold Morris, Longsword, Molly, Mumming, North West Morris, Rapper Sword dancing. The event spans a weekend with the main dancing taking place on the Saturday.
"It aims to celebrate and showcase the widest variety of Morris and traditional dance forms from around the country.
"The event is a free, public festival held in Sandbach's Market Square and town centre
"We seek to raise £6,000 to fund an improved, larger day of dance in 2026 and 2027 following the withdrawal of funding by the Town council. We are inspired by the fantastic support we have received from the residents and businesses of Sandbach and further afield.
"The £6000 will not only fund the next two years festivals but also support the newly formed Sandbach Morris group based in the town. The Sandbach Day of Dance is apolitical, religiously unaffiliated and welcomes all."
