The Sandbach motorway service station has been rated as one of the worst in the UK, according to a customer survey.

The survey carried out by consumer magazine Which? Ranked 68 service stations on factors including prices, cleanliness and range of shops on offer.

Sandbach services, which sits between junctions 16 and 17 on the M6, scored just 42 per cent in the overall customer score, ranking it fourth from last.

The station received its worst customer reviews on pricing, scoring just one out of five stars overall.

Cleanliness and convenience were other areas in which the Sandbach services scored poorly at only two stars.

The station, which is operated by Roadchef, fared slightly better in the 'ease of social distancing' category, with customers rating it three stars.

Knutsford services also didn't fare well from the survey, with an overall rating of 48 per cent and scores of two stars in all but one category.

Which? found that Gloucester services, along the M5, was the "gold standard" of motorway service stations with an overall customer rating of 86 per cent.

In their review, the magazine said: "It's a disservice to describe the stop between junctions 11A and 12 on the M5 as a service station. Unlike the dreary buildings often found on motorways, Gloucester Services has a designer feel, with a roof carpeted in grass and the splash of a pond out the front of its floor-to-ceiling windows."

Meanwhile, on the other end of the list is the Bridgwater services, also along the M5, with a customer rating of 32 per cent.

With one star scores across all of the areas surveyed, the simple message from Which? is "don't stop at Bridgwater. Even if you're desperate for the toilet."
