Sandbach project to stop bags of food going to landfill is nominated for an award
A project launched by Sandbach deputy mayor, Councillor Ann Nevitt, to stop waste food going to landfill has been nominated for an award.
'The Sandbach Food Distribution Alliance', which involves a team of volunteers collecting and delivering food which would otherwise go to landfill, has been put forward for a Cheshire Life 'Champions award'.
The project, which sees food on offer at the Military Arms pub in Congleton Road every Tuesday from noon, has been nominated for the 'Community Project' award, sponsored by Everybody Health & Leisure.
Cheshire Life magazine has launched the awards, which will be presented in Christleton near Chester on May 16th, to mark the magazine's 90th anniversary.
Editor, Joanne Goodwin said the standard of entries was superb and the individuals and organisations nominated are "representative of the thousands of people and good causes that make Cheshire a place where people pull together for the good of others".
'The Sandbach Food Distribution Alliance' project has gone from strength to strength since launching, helping dozens of families in Sandbach struggling with the cost-of-living crisis.
Councillor Ann Nevitt, said she got the idea from Sandbach Co-op Member Pioneer, Arnie Laing, after hearing about surplus food being put into landfill as stores are not able to sell it.
She said: "He explained to me that at the current time, there is surplus food going to landfill at the end of the day.
"If food is marked as 'end of shelf life' although it is still edible, the stores are not allowed to sell it," she said.
"We decided to try and find places who would be interested in taking this food and distributing it."
The project distributes food to various locations in the town, including Wellgate Supported Living, the Marriott House Monday Club and the Sandbach branch of the Stroke Survivors Speech and Language Group.
Sandbach Nub News wishes 'The Sandbach Food Distribution Alliance' every success in the Cheshire Life 'Champions awards'. Fingers crossed!
