Meet the Sandbach judo champion man who's notched up a bronze medal for England.

Martin Barrie represented England in the veteran's category in the Commonwealth judo championships in Malta.

The veteran judo star came third in the judo masters M6 in his age and weight class under 100 kilos.

Martin said: "I'm 58 years younger and still competing in international tournaments.

"The training is hard and it takes time and commitment to be able to compete at this level."

And the bronze medal isn't the only accolade Martin won in Malta. He also came third in another event.

"The 'Newas', fighting just from the ground translated from Japanese to 'groundwork' took place last Friday and I again took part and made third place in my weight class."

Martin trains at a club in Cheadle but also visits Sandbach Judo Club which trains on Friday nights at St Mary's Church Hall in the town.

Martin also maintains his fitness regime out walking his dog and or pounding the streets around Sandbach running.

"I'm regularly out running around the local area or taking Max my dog for long walks and I know a lot of people that stop and ask how the training is going," said Martin.

Martin says he's happy with his latest bronze medal in Malta. "It's a result I'm very proud of," he said.
