Police have warned Sandbach residents not to use e-scooters on public streets and roads in the town.

A post on the Sandbach Elworth and Rural Facebook page over the weekend said: "Trials for the rental of e-scooters are being held in a number of towns, but this does not include Sandbach.

"Use of e-scooters or other powered transporters such as segways, hoverboards, etc are illegal unless used on private land with the landowners permission."

They also warned that people risked fines and penalty points on drivers licences.

The post sparked a debate in the comments, with one person commenting: "How is this different from an electric bicycle? Absolute joke. We should be embracing electric personal transport if it gets people out of cars."

Another wrote: "Have you ran out of work? C'mon really"

One user called on the authorities to "actually get local police to enforce this".

The discussion led to the police following up their post with another, stating: "The post yesterday regarding the e-scooters has created a healthy debate.

"We would assume that a consultation will be held once the trials have been run to assess its success or otherwise, with a view to a potential rollout across the country. Until such time, they are only allowed to be used on private land with the landowners' permission."
