Sandbach School head tells how it was ahead of the game spotting RAAC last year
The head of a Sandbach school which discovered it had RAAC, reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete, has revealed how it was ahead of the game.
Sarah Burns, headteacher at Sandbach School in Crewe Road, said the school discovered it had RAAC in its Lime Refectory a year ago.
The building was immediately closed and a marquee was put up to house the second refectory.
Work started on the Lime Refectory in July and is expected to be complete by the end of this month (September).
Mrs Burns said: "Basically the building is being clad with wood and work should be complete by the end of September.
"As soon as we spotted it, the building was vacated and a temporary marquee was put up.
"We're fortunate to have spotted it so early and to have faced this in a timely way."
Mrs Burns said the school had received funding from the Government when the RAAC was spotted.
The school has sent a message to parents of the school explaining the situation, saying only one of its buildings was impacted.
"This building was closed to students last year with students temporarily utilising a marquee instead," the school said.
"We have been working in co-operation with the DFE for a number of months and are pleased to confirm that the propping works to make the building safe and allow re-occupation will be completed imminently.
"Students will only be permitted to re-enter the building once these propping works are completed and signed off."
