A Sandbach School pupil has become the world champion power lifter in his weight category and set a new world record.

Hadyn Jenkins competed in the 16-17 years, under 67.5kg, deadlift category of the AWPC Powerlifting World Championship and set a new world record by lifting 240kg.

The powerlifter, a pupil at the Crewe Road school, began powerlifting to become stronger for playing rugby, starting with a small set of weights, teaching himself through YouTube.

He found a coach, Dan Davies at Stone Strength and Conditioning, who combined preparation for rugby into the training schedule too.

Hadyn's first competition was the British Championships, in May. He won, becoming British champion and breaking the world record with a lift of 220kg which qualified him for the World Championships.

At the World Championships, he opened his campaign with 220kg, equalling his previous record, followed by 225kg and 230kg, each time breaking his own records.

This allowed him a fourth lift and the decision was made to add a further 10kg. He lifted 240kg perfectly, over three and a half times his body weight, setting a new world record.

Well done Haydn!
