Sandbach Station is the best kept station in Cheshire East – and that's official!
The station won the Cheshire East award in the 19th Cheshire Best Kept Stations competition – for the second time.
Judges were impressed by the pride taken in the station and noted the colourful planters on both platforms and the station front.
And the station, in Elworth, was also noted for its artwork created by local artist, Victoria Holland.
Victoria created murals using Posca pens, a favourite of street artists using the town's history and its links with Fodens.
She created colourful images to welcome passengers and help put the town on the map as Nub News told Click here.
Judges said: "Excellent and effective art installations brighten the waiting room windows and the main station building, where the staff entrance has become the "Potting Shed" door.
A delighted John Scarrott, chair of Friends of Sandbach Station (FOSS) said: "It's the second time we have won this award in the last three years.
"The work on Potting Shed door and Victoria's Art Studio work on the waiting room were highlighted as were our excellent floral displays.
"We're hoping to have some success again next year as our installation of a 10ft by 2ft vintage Sandbach sign erected in November 2021 was not in place when the judging took place.
"We have a great team at Sandbach who work extremely hard to keep our station looking bright."
The award was presented by Chris Jackson, Regional Director of Northern, at a ceremony at The Grange Theatre in Hartford.
But Sandbach wasn't the only local station to be successful. Alsager railway station was highly commended in the CrossCountry Promoting Rail award category.
Sandbach Nub New's sister site, Alsager Nub News, told Click how the town had scooped that award.
And nearby Goostrey was also successful, scooping the Sustainability award.
Judges said of Goostrey: "A station where the Friends Group has comprehensively taken sustainability into account, increasing
biodiversity by mapping of species using a GIS system, working with young people to build bird and bat boxes and bug hotels. "They have introduced perennial, low maintenance, drought free plants without peat or weedkillers, incredibly using another GIS to montor plastic pollution in the Azores, campaigning to restore a Victorian station building to preserve industrial heritage and create business opportunities for the rural economy." Well done to all the winners!
