A group set up to help people who have had strokes is holding an event in Sandbach tomorrow (Wednesday) to looking at the possibility of setting up a branch in the town.

Stroke Survivors Speech and Language Support Group, which has branches in Alsager and Crewe, is holding an evaluation day at Ashfields Primary Care Centre on Wednesday (July 5th).

If enough people come forward, a third group will be set up in the town to help sufferers of strokes and their families.

"We are looking to see if there is interest in Sandbach for us to open another Stroke Survivors Speech and Language Support Group," said stroke group member, Arthur Harding.

"We currently have them in Crewe and Alsager but realise that transport from Sandbach can be difficult hence the possibility of opening one in Sandbach."

Arthur added: "Please come along to meet us, several of us are stroke survivors. We would love to meet you, tell you all about what we do and more importantly, how we can help you."

Founder, Liz Bedson, who set up the first group in Crewe in 2018 after her own father had a stroke, will be at tomorrow's event which takes place from 10 am until 6 pm.

Liz personally understood the experience and challenges of having a loved one survive a stroke so she established the Crewe group and then due to need and demand, opened a second group in 2022 in Alsager.

Our sister site, Alsager Nub News told here how the group has helped one Winterley man who sadly suffered a stroke

"The groups allow every participant to enjoy and challenge themselves whilst being amongst people who have lived through stroke," said a spokesperson.

"The value of the groups and their support is immeasurable and for their members it gives them a target and a purpose.

After a stroke, many survivors lose their confidence, self-esteem and identity so become socially isolated.

"We provide a safe and relaxing environment, with peer support and practical tools to develop new ways of communicating through engaging activities."

Information about activities run by the two groups can be found on their website here
