A student from Sandbach has put his school and the town on the map after scooping a top place in a prestigious geography competition.

Fin Dobson from Sandbach School was awarded 'Young Geographer of the Year' in KS4 (14 – 16) at the Royal Geographical Society's 'Young Geographer of the Year' competition.

For over two decades, the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) has recognised the outstanding work of the next generation of geographers with its Young Geographer of the Year competition.

An international award with categories spanning the primary years to A Level, the competition encourages young people to think creatively and analytically about geographical themes.

The theme for 2023 was 'A blueprint for the future', with entrants being invited to share innovative ideas to address problems in areas such as food production and supply, energy and sustainability, resources, population growth, travel, biodiversity and more.

Kathryn McGrath, head of geography at Sandbach School in Crewe Road said: "It was fantastic to see Fin's hard work on 'sustainable housing regulations for the future' being recognised by the Royal Geographical Society in London and to win the Key Stage 4 category against an outstanding field of entries from all over the country.

"It shows the importance of providing opportunities for students' to think creatively and independently about how we can adapt to the future challenges faced on our planet and develop their geographical understanding beyond the classroom.

"It was great to see Tom Heap from BBC Countryfile and the President of the society recognise this and present Fin with his well-deserved trophy! Well done Fin!"

Professor Joe Smith, Director of the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) said, "Congratulations to the winners and everyone who took part in the competition. The entries we received were truly inspiring and there were a great number of exceptional entries that provided effective solutions to deal with topical challenges.

"As a global community we are facing many complex geographical problems now which will become increasingly critical in the future.

"The 'blueprints' submitted give me hope that the next generation of geographers is well equipped with the skills and understanding to drive forward the changes needed to ensure a sustainable future."
