Pupils at a Sandbach school have raised more than £5,000 for research into an illness which sadly claimed the life of one of their teachers.

Design and technology teacher, Kevin Gornall, died aged 47, from a brain tumour last year.

Sandbach High School and Sixth Form College adopted Brain Tumour Research as one of its charities for the year and held various events throughout the year to raise the money.

Mr Gornall was one of the driving forces behind the school's successful CUAC (Complete And Utter Chaos) car project which is popular at the Middlewich Road school.

And girls from the project joined together with Mr Gornall's widow, Sarah Lennon, to present a cheque for £5,042.44 to the charity.

Sarah said: "It's wonderful to see how much they have raised.

"Kevin loved the car club and spent many weekends working on it. It's great to see their enthusiasm."

Tania Faverzani, community fundraiser at Brain Tumour Research said: "We're really grateful to all of the pupils and staff at Sandbach High School for raising this incredible amount of money for us.

"It's only with the support of people like them that we're able to progress our research into brain tumours and improve the outcome for patients like Kevin who are forced to fight this awful disease.

"Brain tumours are indiscriminate. They can affect anyone at any time. Too little is known about this disease and that is why increased investment in research it vital."

Members of the popular CUAC car club are continuing to keep their former teacher proud, after coming back from a recent event with a clutch of awards.

The girls won the Spirit of Greenpower and a Sustainability award at a recent event at Aintree.

And they will always have Mr Gornall "on their shoulder" when they are racing as they put a logo dedicated in his memory on each of their cars behind the driver.
