Ice, snow, cold and long winter days can be difficutl but award-winning Right at Home South Cheshire has advice to help seniors get through these tricky months.

As the temperatures drop, Right at Home South Cheshire say it's essential for seniors to take extra steps to stay safe and comfortable.
"Cold weather can pose unique challenges but with a little care you can enjoy the winter," they say.

Their advice is to:
- Layer Up: Wear loose, warm layers to trap heat. Natural fibres like wool or fleece work best. Don't forget gloves, hats, and scarves, which are key to keeping body heat in.
- Stay Active Indoors: Staying indoors more doesn't mean becoming inactive. Light stretching, walking around the house, or following an exercise video can help maintain circulation and keep you warm.
- Check Your Home: Make sure your home is winter-ready. Seal drafty windows, and ensure your heating system works properly. Keep a blanket nearby for extra warmth.
- Stock Up: Avoid unnecessary trips in icy conditions by having a well-stocked pantry and enough medications on hand. Delivery services for shopping can be a convenient option, or a local homecare provider will usually offer support with these tasks.
- Stay Connected: Regularly check in with family, friends, or neighbours, especially during extreme weather. If you have a care provider who visits you then they should be able to offer companionship services which can include having trips out into your local community. Get involved in local social groups for Seniors, there are many to choose from around Nantwich, Crewe, Alsager, Sandbach, Winsford and Northwich.
- Be Mindful of Falls: Ice and snow increase the risk of slips and falls. Wear proper footwear with good traction, and use salt or sand to clear walkways. Have someone with you to take trips out – family and friends, or a local care provider (some care companies allow staff to wear their own clothes so the service can be provided discreetly).
They added: "With these simple precautions, you can stay healthy and enjoy the beauty of the autumn and winter season from a place of comfort and safety."
