Temperatures have risen again which means older adults face increased health risks from heat.

Age-related changes in the body such as reduced sweat production and lower reactions to thirst make seniors more susceptible to heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

Carers and family members should stay vigilant during any forecast period of increased temperatures.

During major heatwaves (such as in the summers of 2018 and 2019), NHS hospitals experienced a record number of attendances at A&E, including older patients suffering heat exhaustion, respiratory distress, dehydration, fainting, and falls.

Across NHS England, May–August admissions grow by approximately four to five per cent year-on-year, particularly driven by older and frail patients.

In London, during the 2003 heatwave, 16 per cent excess hospital admissions were observed in over-75s.

Over at Right at Home, we ask our Care Professionals and our clients to take extra care during these times and below are just a few of our top tips:

Hydration is critical. Encourage regular, small sips of water throughout the day, even if the person isn't thirsty. Avoid excessive caffeine or alcohol, which can dehydrate. Drinks should be kept within easy reach, particularly when someone has reduced mobility.

Monitor indoor temperatures. Ensure living spaces stay cool using fans, air conditioning, or by keeping curtains closed during peak sun. Check that seniors have access to cooler areas, especially if they live alone.

Dress appropriately. Light, loose-fitting clothing in breathable fabrics helps regulate body temperature. Wide-brimmed hats and sunscreen are also important for any time outdoors.

Watch for signs of heat stress. Symptoms like dizziness, confusion, headaches, or nausea may indicate overheating. Prompt action—moving to a cooler place, offering fluids, and seeking medical help if necessary — is essential.

Check in regularly. During heatwaves, regular visits or phone calls can ensure elderly loved ones are coping safely. It's a simple step that can make a crucial difference.

Monitor local weather forecasts. If you see that there is a heatwave coming soon then you can think about what you might need to do to keep yourself or your loved ones safe during extreme temperatures.
