Young sport lovers in Sandbach have a chance to net a prize for their skills on the field in a competition for 10 to 16-year-olds this summer.

Avid fans of football, rugby or rounders are being invited to compete for the Salt Wars Cup – named after the area's rich salt heritage.

Run in partnership with Premier League Kicks and Crewe Alexandra Football Club, the free event will see the young people of Sandbach compete against their counterparts in Middlewich and Holmes Chapel.

Open to anyone living in these areas, the initiative has been organised to help youngsters stay active and healthy and have fun during the school holidays.

Children will compete against each other at Sandbach School on Thursday 5 August, at Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School on Thursday 12 August and at Middlewich High School on Saturday 21 August.

Each session, whether it be football, rounders or rugby, will consist of a warm-up, skills games and a match.

Activities will take place from 10am to 4pm each day and those taking part in the Salt Wars Cup must register by Saturday 17th July.

The area has renowned links with salt. There were numerous brine shafts and salt works, including a salt works at Malkins Bank in Sandbach.

At the end of the competition, there will be a celebration day for young people to enjoy on Saturday 28 August, and the participants will each receive certified coaching, including from Crewe Alexandra FC's coaches, drinks and lunch. They will also receive certificates and medals.
