A Middlewich primary school is set to become an academy from the beginning of June.

The Department for Education granted an academy order in June of last year for St Mary's Catholic Primary School to convert to an academy on June 1, 2025.

The school is expected to transfer to Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Academy Trust by that date.

The transfer is on the agenda for next week's meeting of Cheshire East Council's children and families committee.

The council's consent is not required for the school to convert to an academy, but it is needed for the commercial and land transaction.

Steps to ensure this is progressed by June 1 are recommended for approval at next Monday's meeting.

St Mary's Catholic Primary School can cater for 220 pupils and at the beginning of last month had 175 children on its books.

The report to next week's committee meeting says the academy trust currently has 11 academies, including four primaries and one secondary school in Cheshire East.

The other schools are in Cheshire West and Chester, Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin.

The meeting of the children and families committee takes place at 2pm on Monday, April 7, at Macclesfield Town Hall.
