A Sandbach pub reopened today – with new landlords!
The Lower Chequer has been closed for a while but today (Friday) it reopened with new faces behind the bar.
Sam Rock and Gary Evans from The Leopard in Nantwich have taken over the pub, reputed to be the oldest building in the town.
The popular historic Lower Chequer pub in Crown Bank, named after the chequer board, dates back to 1570.
In a previous life, the building was the town's 'counting house, hence the name, before it became a pub.
A spokesperson said: "A spokesperson said: "Famous for their dedication for creating a vibrant community atmosphere and delivering top-notch service, Sam and Gary have been with Joule's Brewery for over 10 years.
"Having been recognised with the 'Taphouse of the Year' award at Joule's Taphouse Awards 2023, as well as the 'Best Pub with Food' at the 2023 Nantwich Food Awards, they are now eager to bring their successful approach to The Lower Chequer.
"The 'Taphouse Takeover' promises to offer a unique blend of great ales, warm hospitality, and an electric atmosphere that Sam and Gary have become known for.
"The Lower Chequer will also be the new home for "Live at the Chequer," a weekly live music event featuring talented musicians every Saturday night at 9pm, running through the end of the year.
"The series will kick off with a special performance on the opening night, setting the tone for many memorable evenings to come."
