An animal rescue charity currently caring for 30 cats is desperately appealing for a venue to host its next three coffee mornings so it doesn't lose out on about £3,000 of funds.

Sandbach Animal Rescue takes in abandoned cats from across the local area, including towns such as Middlewich and Crewe.

Chair of trustees Samantha Moss says the charity has held its fundraisers in Sandbach town hall for a long time but suddenly received an email from the town council cancelling its next three bookings because of staffing issues.

Samantha said: "As a local charity we are funded solely on fundraising and donations, so these cancellations are absolutely devastating.

"With more than 30 cats in our care, a big wait-list and large vets' bills for some poorly kittens, we will struggle without the coffee morning funds.

"We've tried to find an alternative hall, but everything is booked."

Samantha had just taken a call about three 12-week-old kittens who faced being put out on the street.

The sanctuary is full and she ended up taking them into her own home temporarily to ensure their safety.

"We're fundraising to try and make our sanctuary bigger on top of all the other expenses," she said.

"This is why the money from these coffee mornings, which raise about £1,000 a time, is so vital."

A spokesperson for the council said: "Sandbach Town Council is extremely sorry that Sandbach Animal Rescue are unable to use the ball room at the town hall for their coffee mornings at present.

"Unfortunately, there are severe staff shortages with no capacity to provide any service other than honour wedding bookings.

"It is hoped the situation can be resolved quickly and it may be that the group is able to return before May.

"There may be a possibility that an agreement can be made that the group can use the boardroom if available.

"However, this is a much smaller room with no kitchen facilities but would give an opportunity to raise some funds."

Sandbach Animal Rescue opened a charity shop in the town in April 2023 as we reported here but relies heavily on the monthly cofffee monrings.

Anyone who can provide a venue for the coffee mornings should contact Sandbach Animal Rescue on 07349 334615.

Anyone who wishes to donate to help the charity can do so on the website here.
