Travellers who moved on to an open space in Sandbach are set to be moved on after intervention from local residents and a councillor.

Police went to the land off Angelina Close, Elworth earlier today after complaints travellers on moved on to the open area.

One local resident, who asked not to be named, said children use the area to play and now could not do this.

They said: "This is inconsiderate behaviour. It's the school holidays and children play on this land. It shouldn't happen."

A Cheshire police spokesperson said: "At around 9.20pm on Sunday 6th August, officers were called to reports of an unauthorised encampment on Angelina Close in Sandbach.

"Officers attended the scene, where a number of vehicles were found on the site."

Cheshire East councillor, Nicola Cook, said Cheshire Police had served a Section 61 Notice of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 to the caravan owners.

"This means that they now need to move from the site by 8pm tonight and cannot return within 12 months.

"The individuals concerned fully understand that the site chosen is having an impact on residents and have outlined that they will comply with the notice."

Cllr Cook said Cheshire East Council does not have any regulated traveller sites.

Earlier she said: "This means that it takes much longer than it should to support Travellers to move to more appropriate areas," she said.

"I am working with both residents, Cheshire Police, and the Council Gypsy and Traveller Liaison Team to try and get this issue sorted as quickly as possible.

"I would like to thank residents so much for their patience during this time."
