Six ladies pulled on their walking boots and did a 27 mile hike at the weekend to raise cash for cancer.

Sandbach-based Jess Brassington, her sister Juliet Chesters, friends Mel Saywell, Sue Thomas, Clare Farmer and Emily Davies started their epic walk at 8 am on Saturday at Sandbach's Old Hall.

They followed a carefully planned route, devised by Sandbach Footpaths Group, taking in Astbury, Congleton, Mow Cop and Little Moreton Hall, finishing back at the Old Hall at 6.30 pm.

And the ladies, who began practising in December, walking through wind, rain and sleet, have raised around £2,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support from Saturday's walk.

Jess said: "We lost our mum to cancer. We all know someone who has been affected by cancer. It seemed fitting to everyone to do this.

"As a team we were really good and we all helped each other. It was a killer and I found out I wasn't as fit as I want to be but we had a good day."

The walkers, who celebrated with a drink back at the Old Hall when they finished, haven't been put off from doing it again – they have signed up for next year's Mighty Hike in the Lake District.
