A Sandbach pupil found himself making history with his grandad as he went to view his hand-decorated Coronation pennant flying high in the town centre.

Two thousand Coronation pennants hand-decorated by primary school children in Sandbach have been hung above The Cobbles.

And one pupil, Cole Birchall from Elworth Hall Primary School, went with his grandad, Arnie Laing, Sandbach's Co-op Pioneer (pictured below) to view his own pennant.

The youngster found his own pennant amongst the hundreds of others flying above The Cobbles.

Sandbach Nub News told earlier here how councillors and volunteers had hung the flags up on The Cobbles.

Arnie, who lives in Elworth, said: "I picked up Cole from school and he had seen my car in the town centre on Tuesday night and asked where I'd gone.

"When I collected him on Wednesday afternoon, I explained I'd gone to help put up the pennants the night before.

"We decided to go and have a look ourselves to see if we could find his and we did. It was lovely to see."

The Cobbles are where the town's historic Saxon Crosses are found and where the popular monthly Sandbach Makers Market is held.

"It's a great initiative by Sandbach Town Council and great to see everyone working together. The children all loved decorating their flags.

"It's helped them be part of this historic occasion and play their part in helping the town to celebrate."

They work very closely with the Local Community Fund recipients which are Local Causes that are supported by the local Co-op Members.

Before retiring, Arnie had worked in financial services for 40 years. Since then, he has devoted his time to volunteering at a number of organisations.
