“We had a fantastic day with quite a few donations from people not wanting a car wash and others paying £10 instead of the £5 requested."

A charity car wash and fun day outside a Sandbach Co-op has raised a bumper £280 towards the Sahara/Toubkal Co-op Trek for Barnardo's.

New store manager at the Co-op in Lawton Way, Elworth, Colin Mason, his colleagues and Co-op Member Pioneer, Arnie Laing, organised the event.

The day, which took place in sweltering temperatures, has raised money for the trek in aid of the UK children's charity, Barnardo's, one of Co-op's charity partners. Co-op members can help support Co-op's national and local causes just by doing their shopping.

Ironically, many Co-op customers decided to get their cars washed to remove Sahara dust which settled on cars overnight last week.

Colin is taking part in the Sahara/Toubkal Co-op Trek in February and is raising funds for Barnardo's.

Co-op colleagues are walking, running, cycling, and climbing to raise £5m which will go towards supporting 750,000 young people, helping them get access to basic needs like food, manage their mental well-being, and open up opportunities for the future. Colin will be trekking the Sahara Desert with several other Co-op colleagues to raise money for Barnardo's.

Arnie said: "We had a fantastic day with quite a few donations from people not wanting a car wash and others paying £10 instead of the £5 requested.

"It went really well and now we're thinking about holding charity car boot sales in aid of Barnardo's."

Sandbach Mayor, Councillor Laura Crane, officially opened the car wash on Saturday (September 9th). She was on her way to another event in the town, Sandbach Market Town Festival, so was dressed in historical costume.

The day also included a raffle and tombola.
