A group set up to keep Elworth Park in tip-top condition has held its first tidy and pick session since electing its new committee.

Around 14 volunteers took part in the tidy up and now the Friends of Elworth Park are busy planning a series of events.

They are applying for a grant for a Jubilee Community Party as well as planning a Lantern Festival and even "talking benches" designed to get people talking.

And they are also planning midweek tidy ups where volunteers who work can meet up in the evening and enjoy some sunshine.

The park dates back to 1937. Restoration of the park for the Elworth community began in 2012, celebrating 75 years.

Gill Merry is the chair of the Friends of Elworth Park, Graham Whitehouse, treasurer and Nicola Cook secretary.

Nicola Cook said: "We had a fantastic get together at the weekend. We weeded beds and planters, washed signs, edged pathways and brushed paths to name a few things.

"It was lovely to come together again and to catch up with news friends and old. We plan to have monthly pick and tidies on a Saturday and also a midweek tidy during the summer months where people can get out and enjoy the sunshine.

"It would be great to see even more people next time. Everyone of whatever age and level of gardening experience would be really welcome.
