Local politicians have reacted angrily to Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak's announcement he was cancelling the rest of the HS2 project due to travel through Cheshire.

Sandbach Nub News told here how instead the £36 billion would be invest in "hundreds" of new transport projects.

Vice-Chair of Cheshire East's Highways and Transport committee and Sandbach councillor, Laura Crane, said it was "disappointing news".

"If the government didn't want to see this through, then they should have made that decision a long time ago to avoid all the wasted investment from councils and other organisations, up and down the country, as they were pushed to make preparations.

"The loss of investment in the area will be felt far and wide but I have to hold on to the hope that some of the unspent money heads to Cheshire.

"Significant investment in public transport is desperately needed and a fair share of the pot would be welcomed.

"Unfortunately, recent history shows that it usually goes to the cities and our residents are abandoned time after time."

Another Sandbach councillor and Cheshire East councillor, Nicola Cook said: "This was not just about faster trains but rather having a modern train system which had the capacity to use the rail network to move freight and cars off our roads, and ensure that we had a modern train system to meet our 21st century needs.

"This decision will be devastating for many businesses, and the regeneration of many towns and cities in the north."
