Sandbach's rich transport heritage has been once again honoured with the unveiling of blue plaque marking the life of an important person – Edwin Foden.

Elworth in Sandbach was the home of the British truck firm, Foden, which dates back to 1856. Paccar acquired the company in 1980, and ceased to use the marque name in 2006.

The area is also linked to ERF, a British truck manufacturer established in 1933 by Edwin Richard Foden, from whose initials the company was named as we revealed in this story here

And the home of Edwin Foden at 22 Hill Street, Elworth is now firmly on the map 0 thanks to a blue plaque  donated by the Foden Society and officially unveailed by Sandbach Mayor, Councillor Ann Nevitt at the weekend.

Cllr Nevitt's late husband, Jim, worked at Foden so there was a personal link to the proceedings on Saturday (October 12th).  Cllr Nevitt also ran Foden Sports and Social Club which later became Cheshire Leisure.

Members of Foden's world-famous brass band played at the event which was also honoured with the appearance of several Foden vehicles.

"It's a great honour to unveil this plaque," Cllr Nevitt, who was assisted at the unveiling by Nathan Shore, chair of the Foden Society which has around 400 members all over the world.

Foden's continues to be a big part of the town's history and vehicles make an annual appearance at Sandbach Transport Festival held every April

The annual event is also supported by ERF who also played a big part in Sandbach's transport history.
