A professional sportsman residing in nearby Crewe has charged to the top of the world rankings, after reaching the 2023/24 World Darts Championship final.

Luke Humphries, 28, delivered one of the best ever performances in the competition's semi finals, defeating Scott Williams 6-0 yesterday (Tuesday).

Born in Newbury, Berkshire, Humphries has lived in Crewe with his family for a number of years.

Humphries, on the back of 18 straight wins, is aiming become just the third player in history to win four Premier TV titles in the space of 12 months.

In the way for the 2023 World Grand Prix champion, is Cheshire's teenage sensation, Luke Littler.

The 16-year-old, who is playing in his first world tournament, beat Rob Cross 6-2 to storm into Wednesday's (January 3) final.

On facing Littler, Humphries told Sky Sports: "The way he's played, I've seen it many times - but when you come up on this stage, it can be a lot tougher, and he's just proved he's got a lot of bottle.

"Nothing is going to faze him - if he played like that tonight, tomorrow is not going to faze him at all.

"So I'll probably have to play the game of my life to stand a chance of beating him. I know what's in front of me, I've got to play at my best.

Luke Humphries (right), will face Luke Littler (left), in the World Darts Championship final at 7:30pm on Wednesday 3 January (Ryan Parker).

"But, I'm hoping I make him play at his best and we give the fans one of the best world finals that's ever been seen."

Watch the World Darts Championship final at 7:30pm on Wednesday 3 January, live on Sky Sports Darts and Sky Sports Main Event.
