The M6 near Sandbach southbound was closed for a while last night after a HGV trailer caught fire.

Three fire engines – one each from Middlewich, Crewe and Northwich - went to the blaze at 7.31 pm last night (March 11th).

Junctions 18 to 17 were shut while firefighters tackled the blaze, involving a mixture of goods including tyres.

A spokesperson from Cheshire Fire & Rescue Service said: "Crews used hose reel jets and breathing apparatus to extinguish the fire. A full closure was put in place on the southbound carriageway.

"Crews used two sets of breathing apparatus, one main jet, two hose reel jets and a water bowser.

"National Highways maintained the road closure."
