Rail passengers were slightly delayed today (Thursday) after a cow was reported on land near the railway track just outside Sandbach .

One passenger told how the train he was travelling on was stationary for about 10 minutes after the guard alerted passengers that a cow was near the track.

The incident happened around 11 am between Sandbach and Goostrey on the 10.06 am Manchester Piccadilly to Crewe.

A spokesperson for Northern said: "Earlier today, there were reports of a cow on land alongside the track approximately one mile south of Goostrey station.

"As a precaution, Network Rail issued a caution to drivers and attended the scene.

"The cow was already back in the field and at no point was the cow on the track. No services have been affected."
