Campaigners in Sandbach fighting to reduce the impact of climate change say more than 97 per cent of climate scientists recognise that changes are due to man-made carbon emissions.

Sandbach Mayor, Councillor Sam Corcoran, Cheshire East's climate change champion, and a town councillor for Sandbach Heath and East ward, spoke at a Climate Change demonstration at the weekend,

He said there are five responsible for more than half of all global deaths - tobacco, alcohol, gambling, food and fossil fuels.

"The oil industry is now using the same playbook that the tobacco industry used in the last century. First deny the problem, then pay people to argue that the science is unclear and pay scientists to make equivocal statements.

"When that fails, talk about the health benefits of smoking and how much tax is raised from selling cigarettes.

"These industries know that their actions result in people dying but continue making profits. The amount of tax that will be raised from the Rosebank oil field is far less than the costs.

"Despite all the money spent by the oil industry and misinformation 77 per cent of people are concerned or very concerned about climate change."

Cllr Corcoran added: "The more people know about climate change, the more they are convinced that it is happening and that it is due to man-made carbon emissions."

Sam Corcoran gave 4 top tips for reducing your carbon emissions and saving money:

1) Insulate your loft with 40cm of insulation loft – saving money as well as reducing carbon emissions

2) Use your car less - walk and cycle more which is good for your health as well as being good for the planet

3) Eat less red meat – this is also good for your health as well as being good for the planet. The carbon footprint of beef and lamb is much higher than pork, chicken or vegetarian options.

Cheshire has some of the best dairy farms in the world, with grass fed cows. but check where the meat in your burger has come from.

4) You can save money by installing solar panels and a battery. The Cheshire East Council's 'Switch Together' scheme ensures you get a trusted installer at a reasonable price.

And he is also urging residents to attend the screening of the National Emergency Briefing film in Nantwich on 5 October 7.30 pm in Nantwich Civic Hall here
