Parents, carers and local residents now have a smart new bench to sit on - thanks to creative-minded pupils at a Sandbach primary school.

Children from Elworth Church of England Primary School in School Lane took part in a Sandbach Town Council project to help shape the future of their town.

The youngsters presented their ideas at a town council meeting a year ago as revealed here and now their plan, to have benches with welcome messages on has happened.

They took part in a 'mock' council meeting and now the first of the benches which are made out of recycled plastic, has been installed outside Elworth Church of England Primary School and is being used.

The project was led by Sandbach Town Councillor, Councillor Simon Richards, who said: "We're delighted with the result. The children have taken part in decision-making and come up with this project themselves.

"The idea for the benches has come from the children and Sandbach Town Council has made it happen. It's part of the project to have something lasting for Sandbach."

Neil Garratt, headteacher, said: "Any project which combines decision-making is fantastic. It's being well-used and is a great addition to the local area."

Each bench costs around £800 and the plan is to have a bench in each of Sandbach's four wards.
