Sandbach Rugby Union Football Club has paid homage to a long-standing club chairman who has sadly died.
The club announced that club legend, Robin Astles, has lost his battle with the rare but serious condition amyloidosis.
The Bradwall Road club described Robin as "a true character of the club" and "influential in so many ways".
Robin was chairman from 2009 until 2016, overseeing a period of growth in the club. He, as the 1st XV made their way to the National Leagues, a level they still retain.
A statement from Sandbach RUFC said: "Robin joined the then Old Sandbachians in the late 1960's, joining his older brother Tony, and soon became a charismatic member of the club, with his ready wit and bravado, much to the fore.
"With his engaging personality he was able to attract players to the team and being a strong and powerful runner, he scored plenty of tries.
"Even more so as he was always reluctant to pass, if he thought he might cross the whitewash himself.
"He played several games in the 1st XV in the early 80's before leaving to work overseas for a few years.
"Upon his return, he played with many of his old teammates in the fabled 4th XV / Vets teams of the late 90's, early 2000's and was over 50 when he eventually hung up his boots, though he did turn out in the odd social game. "
The club added: "Robin you will be greatly missed but take heart in the mark that you have left not only in the local fabric but in the hearts and minds of the people you met."
