Sandbach woman to relive her memories of life as a 'Ten Pound Pom' as new TV series airs

By Deborah Bowyer 14th May 2023

One Sandbach woman will be watching the launch of a new series about an idyllic life Down Under when it airs tonight (Sunday).

For Sue Wilson from Belmont Avenue was part of the Ten Pound Poms assisted package scheme with her family all those years ago.

Sue Wilson was just 12-years-old when she set sail with her family on the Fairsea liner from Southampton to make a new life in Perth, Australia.

And Sue, originally from Liverpool, wrote a book about her big adventure as a child, Ten Pound Poms, telling the challenges and changes and sometimes the sadness.

Sandbach Nub News interviewed Sue here when she launched her sequel to 'Ten Pound Poms'.

Sue and her husband Ian went out to Australia to look at where Sue spent her childhood and to see where she landed in Australia.

Sue recalls her days as a child making that epic journey.

"We spent a month on a boat getting there and lived in a cabin," she said. "My sister and I had bunk beds and my mum and dad a bed.

"All our things were packed in a tea chest and cases and I can remember seeing land and Australia for the first time.

"We had lots of happy times but also some sad times and I just wanted to share them."

Sue said she's looking forward to tonight's airing of the first part of 'Ten Pound Poms' on BBC1.

"The memories of the sailing, the introduction of food we had never seen or tasted before whilst travelling and the different countries we stopped at.

"Our experiences living in the hostel. All this will bring back memories," says Sue.

Australia's Assisted Package Migration Scheme was set up after the Second World War aimed at supplying much-needed workers for Australia's industry.

It airs on BBC1 tonight at 9 pm.
