Storm Ciaran: Rail services 'delayed' and 'cancelled' on Sandbach line

A large number of railway services have been 'delayed by up to 35 minutes or cancelled" on the Sandbach line, following storm damage between Stafford and Crewe.

Strong winds from Storm Ciaran caused damage to overhead power lines at 6:52am on Friday 3 November.

It was first expected the lines would be back to normal by mid-morning, but this was pushed back to 12:30pm.

Rail services are expected to be back to normal by 12:30pm (Nub News).

This damage has affected Avanti West Coast services between Birmingham New Street and Crewe / Glasgow Central / Edinburgh.

It is also affected Avanti services between London Euston and Manchester Piccadilly / Liverpool Lime Street / Blackpool North / Chester / Holyhead / Glasgow Central / Edinburgh.

CrossCountry services have been affected between Southampton Central / Bournemouth / Bristol Temple Meads / Birmingham New Street and Manchester Piccadilly.

London Northwestern Railway services have been also affected between Birmingham New Street and Crewe / Liverpool Lime Street, as well as London Euston and Crewe.

The incident has affected rail services between Crewe, Manchester, Bimringham and London (Ryan Parker).

A National Rail statement read: "Damage to the overhead wires between Stafford and Crewe means some lines are blocked.

"As a result, trains may be delayed by up to 35 minutes or cancelled. This is expected until 12:30pm."
