Motorists in Sandbach are set to have their prayers answered – traffic lights which have delayed motorists for a week are being removed.

Delays have been happening on London Road, Elworth following a a lorry cab which went up in flames a week ago, damaging the road surface.

Now highways chiefs say the road has been repaired and the temporary traffic lights which have been holding up motorists driving in and out of Sandbach along London Road are being removed.

The cab following the blaze last Tuesday afternoon

Lorry driver, Brian Green, from Stoke was waiting at the traffic lights in London Road, Elworth, last Tuesday when a motorist in front of him alerted him that the underneath of the cab was alight.

The plucky man, who has been driving lorries for 35 years, jumped out of the cab, which was stationary at the traffic lights, before watching the cab go up in flames.

Diesel poured out on to the road in the incident and this section of London Road, Elworth has since has temporary traffic lights while the road was repaired.

A Cheshire East Council spokesperson said: "We have repaired (patched) the road today and the temporary lights have now been decommissioned.

"We are now awaiting for the lights to be collected from site."
