Firefighters had to cut free two casualties who were trapped in vehicles following a five-vehicle crash on the M6 near Sandbach at the weekend.

All four lanes of the motorway southbound were also closed for a while following the accident on the southbound junctions 18 – 17 on Saturday (March 2nd).

Fire engines from Sandbach and Middlewich plus ones from Crewe and Lymm went to the accident at 8.51 pm.

A Cheshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: "Using specialist cutting equipment and rescue techniques they released two casualties who were trapped.

"Six people in total were taken to hospital with minor injuries. All four lanes of the motorway were closed for a time while emergency services dealt with the incident.

"Fire engines were in attendance for around one hour 40 minutes."
