Two people were taken to hospital today after a flat fire in Sandbach town centre.

Residents at Sunnymill Drive flats on Middlewich Road, opposite Cheshire East Council's headquarters, were evacuated this morning after a fire broke out in a first floor flat.

A Cheshire fire service spokesman said the two residents were taken to hospital for precautionary checks.

Six fire engines and an aerial fire appliance were at the scene and people living in nearby flats and houses were advised to keep windows and doors shut.

Motorists were urged to avoid this part of Sandbach while the fire service dealt with the incident and parents collecting school children were advised to allow extra time.

The fire service spokesman said the cause of the blaze was being investigated.
