Two town councillors resign within days of each other - one claiming he wasn't being listened to
Two Middlewich town councillors have resigned within days of each other.
Chris Jones quit Middlewich Town Council at the end of September and David Latham resigned the weekend of October 9.
Mr Latham told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) he had quit because he believed he could not represent people properly when he wasn't listened to.
"I was voted in to make a difference and if I'm not making that difference for whatever reason, and if we're not saving the taxpayer money, then there's no point me being there," he said.
"Very seldom do I get my voice heard."
The final straw appears to have been when Mr Latham, who has 30 years' experience as a builder, said he wasn't listened to regarding quotes received for work on the town council's HQ at the Victoria Building.
He said the town council operated on a best value policy and two of the quotes received were the same, in his opinion.
"I'm saying there's no difference between two quotes and we should be going with the cheaper," he said.
"When you're dealing with money which has come out of the taxpayers' pocket I believe you should be more stringent and I voiced my concerns but, as normal, it was washed under the table."
He also said the council had lost out on sponsorship from a local company because it hadn't drawn up a list of projects which needed doing within the given time-scale, so the company had withdrawn its offer.
"I wish the council well, I hope they can change things round and do things right for the public but perhaps they're going to have to change some of their policies," he said.
"I would like to thank everybody in Middlewich for their loyalty and support over the years."
Middlewich Town Council chair Mike Hunter told the LDRS the matter related to a heating system.
"It's a dearer system but it's a better system. In the long run it will be cheaper to run so it will save us money," he said.
The LDRS was unable to contact Mr Jones to ask why he had resigned from the council.
There are now two vacancies on Middlewich Town Council – both in the Kinderton ward.
An election will be held if 10 electors in the ward give notice to the returning officer requesting an election within 14 working days of the date of the notices advertising each vacancy.
The notices were posted by Cheshire East Council on September 30 and October 13.
