WHSmith is considering selling all of its high street stores as part of a strategic review, including one in Sandbach town centre.

In a statement on Saturday 25 January, the British retailer said it is "exploring potential strategic options for this profitable and cash-generative part of the group, including a possible sale."

The statement continued: "There can be no certainty that any agreement will be reached, and further updates will be provided as and when appropriate."

The move signals a potential shift away from the chain's historic roots on the high street, as WHSmith focuses increasingly on its global travel retail business.

Over the past decade, the company has transformed into what it calls "a focused global travel retailer," now operating over 1,200 stores across 32 countries in locations such as airports, train stations, and hospitals.

This travel arm now accounts for more than 85 per cent of WH Smith's profits, with its high street business making up the remainder.

The announcement comes as high street retailers face ongoing economic challenges and years of declining consumer sentiment.

Locally, WH Smith has been a firm part of the High Street in Sandbach for many years and is a popular shop in the town.

WHSmith permanently closed its Nantwich store at 35 High Street in February 2024, with staff relocating to the stationery branch across the road (Jonathan White).

The news of a possible sale will undoubtedly be closely watched by customers and employees alike, as WHSmith navigates the evolving retail landscape.

Currently, WHSmith operates around 500 high street stores, employing roughly 5,000 staff members.
