Workmen were spotted starting the installation of 'pay and display' machines in Westfields and Chapel Street car parks in Sandbach today (Wednesday).

The first stages of installation is in progress which will end free parking in Cheshire East car parks in Sandbach and many other local car parks.

We revealed here how Cheshire East Council had refused a formal request from the Conservatives to reconsider the decision to introduce parking charges in free towns and hike up prices in others.

The highways and transport committee voted in favour of changes in January to the parking policy, which includes introducing charges in the existing 'free' towns and villages of Alsager, Holmes Chapel, Middlewich, and Sandbach.

And the council is currently consulting residents as we revealed here on plans to charge residents to pay to park in the evenings, and on Sundays.
