Athletes from a Sandbach school have made history - winning first place at the Manchester Indoor Regional Athletics Championships.

Sandbach High School and Sixth Form College's Year 7 athletics team took part in one of the most prestigious events in the schools' athletics calendar.

The day long competition was hosted at the Manchester Regional Arena, part of the iconic Sport City at the famed Etihad campus.

The Year 7s from the Middlewich Road school took part in a variety of track, field, and relay events.

The contest features the strongest athletics schools in the region and this year was attended by 17 schools with a history of success in district, county and regional competitions.

The school came away with a team 'Gold', beating the second-place team by just one point.

Head of PE, Mrs S Friend, said: "This incredible team effort also featured some outstanding individual performances from our Year 7 pupils. Special mentions go to Poppy (High Jump) and Isabella (60m Sprint) who took home individual Silver and Gold, respectively, for their outstanding efforts in their individual events."

Headteacher, Mrs Ellen Walton, said: "We pride ourselves at Sandbach High School and Sixth Form College in being experts in women's sport.

"This prestigious athletics win from our younger athletes is just one example of the massive success that our students enjoy in our school and our Sixth Form.

"We are passionate about sport and about the importance of lifetime participation in sport for good health and well-being.

"The fact that we have won this athletics event in such a competitive field is very much the cherry on the top."
