Sandbach High School and Sixth Form College made history by hosting the first girls' school rugby match in the area in many years, facing off against Ysgol Calon Cymru, a touring side from Wales.

The game was held at Sandbach Rugby Club and, in a momentous occasion for both the school and the wider community, the match drew an enthusiastic crowd of over 100, including students, parents, and local supporters.

Adding to the prestige of the event, the Mayor was in attendance to witness this landmark occasion in school sport.

Now the school has launched a fundraising campaign to put girls' rugby on the map and ensure the teams are properly kitted out and have access to training gear and facilities.

"We invite members of the community to support this initiative through donations or sponsorship. Contributions can be made via pupils' ParentPay accounts or by contacting the school directly," said a spokesperson.

The game itself was a thrilling contest, showcasing the dedication, skill, and determination of both teams. Sandbach High School emerged victorious with a hard-fought 26-21 win, marking a memorable start to what promises to be a bright future for girls' rugby at the school and local area.

Despite being new to the sport, the Sandbach High team demonstrated remarkable teamwork and resilience against a well-drilled Ysgol Calon Cymru side. The match was a testament to the growing enthusiasm for girls' rugby and highlighted the potential of the players involved.

In addition to the senior team's success, the U14s also took to the field, putting in a commendable effort but ultimately falling short in their game. Coach Mr. Williams expressed his pride in the effort put in by all the girls, especially those who were playing their first-ever match. He also thanked all the parents for coming to support the teams.

With the introduction of rugby at Sandbach High School, there is a need for equipment and resources to support the development of the team.

Girls' school rugby in the North West is extremely rare, so if any schools want a fixture, please contact the school or [email protected].
