Super sub steals win for Sandbach
Steve Jones was the hero for Sandbach as he scored twice in the final 10 minutes to see Sandbach run out 2-1 winners over Wythenshawe Amateurs.
Fresh from their opening pre-season victory over FC St Helens, the Ramblers looked to make it two wins from two as they faced fellow NWCFL side Wythenshawe Amateurs on a warm Cheshire evening.
Bobbie McDonnell, who scored a hat-trick in the previous match, was one of several who kept their place in the team following the 5-1 win.
The game started in a lively and open fashion, with Robbie Hatton having the first sight of goal after just 76 seconds. Jack Hart had surged forward before laying the ball off, but Hatton's left footed strike from the edge of the box never looked to trouble the goalkeeper.
Hart then had his own attempt minutes later, whistling just past the far post.
Aaron Knight then showcased his passing ability with a beautiful switch of play to Kieran O'Connell, overlapping from left back, but his low ball towards the penalty spot evaded the onrushing Sandbach players.
Knight then created his own shooting opportunity in the 13th minute after effortlessly skipping through several Wythenshawe tackles, but his final shot was blocked. Sean Moscrop then saw a crisp low volley bounce just wide of the post as the Ramblers looked to make their early dominance count.
After a rather drab ending to the first half, both teams came out looking to establish a lead after the interval. The visitors then won a penalty in their first dangerous attack after 51 minutes following a clear trip in the box.
The striker stepped up and fired an excellent spot kick into the bottom left corner, past the despairing dive of substitute keeper Eric Merner.
The second half lacked in attacking quality from both sides following the Wythenshawe goal, with neither goalkeeper making any saves of note.
However, Andy Hockenhull's introduction of Steve Jones changed the game and brought some real quality in front of goal.
Jones levelled the score in the 80th minute after a wonderful ball over the top of the defence was controlled by the striker, before he held off the Wythenshawe centre half and slotted the ball into the bottom right corner. Sandbach could sense another goal after Jones' equaliser and camped around the Wythenshawe box and sent in several teasing crosses that narrowly evaded the forwards. However, the Ramblers were not to be kept out for long. Knight had been the architect of many forays forward for Sandbach over the course of the match, and it was his sumptuous through ball in the 90th minute to set up the winner. As his inch-perfect pass split the defence, Jones latched onto it before driving into the box and firing a confident strike past the helpless goalkeeper and into the net. Moments later, the final whistle blew to continue the Ramblers 100% winning record for pre-season.
