TRIBUTES have been paid to a well-loved school teacher who inspired pupils to take up sailing.

Geoff Pike, who passed away recently, taught Business and IT at Sandbach School. He arrived at the Crewe Road school in 1999 and in more recent times he was in the forefront helping pupils who struggle with mainstream education in his role as a tutor of an alternative curriculum at the Lodge.

Staff and pupils were moved to pay their tributes on social media and have spoken about Mr Pike's dedication, as well as his sense of humour.

Sandbach School described Mr Pike as "an absolute legend who will be sorely missed".

"He was a much-loved colleague and friend. His life experiences, genuine nature and natural humour helped so many students turn their lives around," the school said on social media.

"Geoff wasn't just born to teach; he was born to inspire others, to change people and to demonstrate how to overcome life's challenges, even when all seems impossible."

Mr Pike also schooled the next generation of teachers and one post from Sarah Burns said: "Such an inspirational mentor to me as an NQT in 2000.

"Not only did he teach me everything I needed for my first year of teaching, he also was a teacher who cared for everyone and got the best out of young people. I'm remembering skiing, sailing and coffee at the Lodge."

Fiona Stops posted: "Very sad to hear this. Sailing trips with the CCF Naval section were great experiences and Geoff taught so many children to sail."
